This is to emphasize on the powers of side stepping and dodging.
Sidestepping is a move in Melee and Brawl that make the character invincible
for a short period of time (a slightly different amount for each character), performed by pressing down while holding the shield button(varies depending on the type of controller you are using). It can be employed to evade any and all attacks of short duration. Its main use is to avoid attacks with long cool down lag, in order to stay close and counterattack.
Sidestepping is the shortest and fastest of the three dodges (rolling, side, and air).
Though the sidestep animation has the character leaning into the background or foreground, the invincibility frames gained dodge all attacks, including those that come from the foreground or background, like the lava wave in the Norfair stage.
Air dodging is a technique in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl that does just as you would expect - it gives temporary invincibility frames to the user in the air, preventing attacks from hitting them. It has sometimes been described as sidestepping in midair.
Rolling is a maneuver that moves the character left or right and renders them invincible for a short period of time. It is performed by pressing the control stick left or right while holding a shield button, which is Z for Brawl.
The amount, duration and timing of these frames varies from character to character. It's an advantage to have quick and long rolls because if it's slow and short, the roll is more predictable and the character is more vulnerable to attacks.
I hope you enjoyed my little guide on Sidestepping and Dodging.
